Winter is our favourite time of year simply because it means game season is in full swing! However, with winter comes the dreaded threat of colds and flu. We have some tips and tricks to boost immunity and to ensure colds and flu don’t score any tries this season!
PUMP THAT VITAMIN C
Vitamin C is a fantastic immune booster. Found in plenty of fruits and vegetables, it is easy to increase your levels of vitamin C and protect yourself this winter:
BRING ON THE GARLIC BREATH
Garlic is also a great immune-boosting food that simply, by adding to your daily diet, will provide your body with an important antioxidant and a key infection-fighting compound.
PROBIOTICS TO PREVENT THE ANTIBIOTIC
There are a number of naturally occurring bacteria in your body that play an essential role in maintaining your immunity and keeping you healthy. Taking probiotics bumps up the number of these bacteria so your body is better prepared to defend against colds and flu. Probiotics can be bought from a pharmacy as a daily supplement, but they are also found in ‘live’ yoghurt, meaning yoghurt that hasn’t been processed to remove the healthy bacteria.
IT’S A SIGN
At the first sign of a cold take it easy for a day or two, skip training and avoid the gym. When your body is under stress, which it is when you are training hard, your immune system is “pressurized” and at times compromised in defending against colds and flu. By taking time out to rest, your body is able to focus on immune defence. Up your intake of vitamin C-rich foods and consider taking an immune-boosting supplement.
